The agreement announced Tuesday also calls for MERCK TO SUBMIT ALL NEW TV COMMERCIALS FOR ITS DRUGS TO THE FOOD AND DRUG ADMINISTRATION FOR REVIEW. The civil settlement ends investigations by 29 states and the District of Columbia into Merck's advertising practices involving Vioxx, Pennsylvania Attorney General Tom Corbett said.

In February, MERCK AGREED TO PAY $671 MILLION to settle claims it overcharged the government for Vioxx and three other popular drugs and bribed doctors to prescribe its drugs. The announcement by federal prosecutors was one of the biggest U.S. health care fraud settlements ever.

Oil prices topping $129 per barrel have sparked anger from consumer nations that have accused OPEC of gouging, but Badri said the boom in oil prices has lifted commodities prices across the board, which has made it more expensive to pump oil.

The law, known as C-51, was introduced by the Canadian Minister of Health on April 8th, 2008, and it proposes sweeping changes to Canada's Food and Drugs Act that could have devastating consequences on the health products industry.

The article, based on documents unearthed in lawsuits over the pain drug Vioxx, provides a rare, detailed look in the industry practice of GHOSTWRITING MEDICAL RESEARCH STUDIES that are then published in academic journals.

"It almost CALLS INTO QUESTION ALL LEGITIMATE RESEARCH that's been conducted by the pharmaceutical industry with the academic physician," Dr. Ross said, whose article, written with colleagues, was published Wednesday in JAMA, the journal of the American Medical Assocation. Merck on Tuesday acknowledged that it sometimes hires outside medical writers to draft research reports before handing them over to the doctors whose names eventually appear on the publication. The Office for National Statistics (ONS) will release figures showing that more than 200,000 Britons emigrated during 2006.
