UK - Jellyfish are continuing to clog the cooling intake pipes of a nuclear power plant in Scotland, which has previously prompted temporary shutdowns of the plant. The Torness nuclear power plant has reported concerns regarding jellyfish as far back as 2011, when it was forced to shut down for nearly a week — at an estimated cost of $1.5 million a day — because of the free-swimming marine animals. Like many other seaside power plants, the Torness plant uses seawater to prevent overheating. While there are measures in place to prevent aquatic life from entering the intake pipes, according to the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, they are no match for the sheer number of jellyfish that come during so-called “jellyfish blooms.” “Usually, screens prevent aquatic life and similar debris from being drawn into the power plants’ cooling system,” the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists wrote in a 2015 blog post. “But when sufficiently large volumes of jellyfish or other aquatic life are pulled in, they block the screens, reducing the volume of water coming in and forcing the reactor to shut down.”

USA - In Wichita, Kansas, nearly half of the roughly 10,000 employees at aircraft companies Textron Inc and Spirit AeroSystems remain unvaccinated against COVID-19, risking their jobs in defiance of a federal mandate, according to a union official. "We're going to lose a lot of employees over this," said Cornell Adams, head of the local Machinists union district. Many workers did not object to the vaccines as such, he said, but were staunchly opposed to what they see as government meddling in personal health decisions. The union district has hired a Texas-based lawyer to assist employees and prepare potential lawsuits against the companies should requests for medical or religious exemptions to vaccination be denied. EUROPE - The EU is facing a crisis on four levels as France, Germany and Poland shift away from Brussels' rules, a top lawyer has warned. Steven Barrett, Commercial Chancery Barrister at Radcliffe Chambers, has identified four areas of concern for the bloc when it comes to upholding the rule of law. The rule of law is enshrined in Article two of the Treaty on European Union as a prerequisite for all member states in order to protect the fundamentals of the bloc. But in a series of posts on Twitter, Mr Barrett suggested the cornerstone of the EU is under threat.

The pledge made at the COP26 climate summit is known as the ‘Global Coal to Clean Power Transition Statement.’ The pledge requires countries to end investment in coal power plants, increase green power and phase out coal power in major economies during the 2030s and for other countries in the 2040s. However, China and Russia are not onboard with the plans and neither President Putin nor President Xi Jinping even attended the COP26 climate summit. Business Secretary Kwasi Kwarteng said: “Today marks a milestone moment in our global efforts to tackle climate change as nations from all corners of the world unite in Glasgow to declare that coal has no part to play in our future power generation.

UK - People in the UK who post “false information” about vaccines online could face two years in prison under a new law. Yes, really. The Online Safety Bill, described as “the flagship legislation to combat abuse and hatred on the internet” has faced fierce criticism from civil liberties groups for its broad overreach. The law would create a “knowingly false communication” offense which, according to the Times, “will criminalise those who send or post a message they know to be false with the intention to cause ‘emotional, psychological, or physical harm to the likely audience’. Government sources gave the example of antivaxers spreading false information that they know to be untrue.” Given that authorities have deemed all kinds of information about the pandemic and vaccines “false” that later turned out to be true, this is a chilling prospect. For example, claims that vaccines are not fully effective in stopping the spread of COVID-19 would have once been deemed “false,” but that position is now a proven fact.
