USA - Texas is experiencing one of its coldest winter in decades , with temperatures expected to drop to as low as 11F (-12C) in Houston and 9F (-13C) in San Antonio under a winter storm warning. The governor, Greg Abbott, issued a disaster declaration for every county in the state on Friday, as conditions continued to get colder over the weekend. The White House also issued a federal emergency declaration for Texas, authorizing the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to provide additional support to the state. Snow and ice blanket the US north-west, leaving hundreds of thousands without power. “Every part of the state of Texas will face freezing conditions. That includes all the way down to Brownsville, Texas, over the coming days,” Abbott said in a press conference. Unlike north-east states, Texas roads are not typically laid with salt, which helps melt ice. So roads in the state are not equipped to handle ice or sleet and most cars in the state don’t have snow tires.
USA - Many people around the world looked on aghast as they witnessed the harm done by conspiracy theories such as QAnon and the myth of the stolen US election that led to the attack on the US Capitol Building on January 6. Yet while these ideas will no doubt fade in time, there is arguably a much more enduring conspiracy theory that also pervades America in the form of young Earth creationism. And it’s one that we cannot ignore because it is dangerously opposed to science.

Jeremiah Johnson, a 33-year-old self-described prophet, was one of the few evangelical Christians who took Donald J Trump’s political future seriously back in 2015. This track record created a loyal audience of hundreds of thousands of people who follow him on social media and hang on his predictions about such topics as the coronavirus pandemic, the makeup of the Supreme Court, and the possibility of spiritual revival in America. And they took comfort ahead of the presidential election last fall when Mr Johnson shared a prophetic dream of Mr Trump stumbling while running the Boston Marathon, until two frail older women emerged from the crowd to help him over the finish line. So when Joseph R Biden Jr was certified as the winner of the election, Mr. Johnson had to admit he had let his followers down.
UK - If your local pub ever reopens, don’t be surprised if one thing is missing: the till. The anti-cash lobby is seeking to take advantage of the pandemic to rid us of our banknotes once and for all. When UK Finance — the trade body for the banking and payments industry — pushed the government two weeks ago to increase the limit on contactless card payments to £100 (it was raised from £30 to £45 at the beginning of the pandemic), it was a new offensive in a campaign for a cashless society which has been going on for years.
USA - Young people are running wild all over the country, and nobody seems to be able to come up with a solution to slow down the violence. Following the tragic death of George Floyd, teens were disproportionally involved in the rioting, looting and arson that erupted in major cities throughout the nation for the remainder of 2020. And sometimes they would just take out their frustrations on random people on the street. But in addition to violence that was spurred by social movements, most of our urban areas also experienced dramatic spikes in their murder rates. In fact, one recently released report found that murder rates rose by an average of 30 percent in 34 of our largest cities…That 30 percent average increase was the biggest one year spike ever recorded, and way too much of the time these murders are being committed by Americans under the age of 20. Our nation is degenerating right in front of our eyes, and it is only going to get worse.
USA - Some feminists are now facing the fact that Planned Parenthood, once a staunch champion for women’s rights, is currently one of the largest providers of transgender treatments in the United States, having become a leader in an industry that supports the elimination of the legal recognition of two sexes in favor of gender identity. Transgender industry author Abigail Shrier wrote this week of a conversation with a former Planned Parenthood employee who is apparently reconciling the fact that the abortion provider’s transgender political activism may ultimately undermine its existence.
USA - When corporations become more powerful than the government, our definition of “big brother” needs to change. Throughout human history, our God-given liberties and freedoms have often been brutally crushed by oppressive governments, and that is still happening all over the world today. But in our time, an additional threat to our liberties and freedoms has emerged. Global corporations just continue to get larger and more powerful, and in recent years they have been increasingly using that power to shape society. This is a very dangerous trend, because in the western world many of the constraints that our national governments are forced to operate under simply do not apply to corporations. This gives them an enormous amount of leverage, and they are using it.

USA - President Donald Trump was acquitted in his Senate impeachment trial Saturday as the vast majority of Republicans held together against a charge that he incited the Capitol riot of January 6. After a roll call vote of the Senate, 57 senators voted to convict, with 43 senators voting to acquit. It wasn't enough to meet the two-thirds threshold set out in the Constitution. A total of seven Republicans voted to convict. 'It is hereby acquitted of the charge in said article,' said Senator Patrick Leahy of Vermont after the votes were cast.
USA - McConnell and the GOP elites (GOPe) worked against President Trump for years preventing him from passing his wildly popular agenda to protect America, its workers, and its citizens. As reported earlier, McConnell did not hold back as he ripped Trump apart for a “disgraceful dereliction of duty” and attempting to “overturn the election.” He claimed that the protesters stormed the Capitol because they had been “fed wild falsehoods by the most powerful man on earth,” and that Trump was “practically and morally responsible for provoking the events of the day.” And then Mitch McConnell suggested that President Trump can still be charged in the criminal justice system! President Trump is the most popular Republican in history – He helped Mitch McConnell get reelected! This is his thanks! The Republican elites REALLY, REALLY hate their base!
USA - The former president is going to be acquitted at his second impeachment trial. America will see that the over-emotional Dems overreached again – and why they really want to stop him from ever running again. In a few days, former US President Donald J Trump will have to go through an impeachment trial as a citizen because the Democrats want to publicly drag his name through the mud with their innuendos and allegations. They want to destroy his name so that he can't run for the White House again. It’s a testament to his appeal, power, and how much they worry about him – he gives them so many headaches because he isn't one of them.
NIGERIA - Joe Biden has issued a presidential memorandum threatening “financial sanctions” on African countries for failing to embrace the LGBTQI+ agenda. The memorandum directs federal agencies to “conduct and expand efforts to combat discrimination, homophobia, transphobia, and intolerance on the basis of LGBTQI+ status or conduct”, with an annual report detailing the status of LGBTQI+ rights in countries around the world. The memorandum further adds that countries deemed to be “contributing to a climate of intolerance” will face consequences, “including using the full range of diplomatic and assistance tools and, as appropriate, financial sanctions, visa restrictions, and other actions”. Many of the countries at risk of sanctions are deeply Christian conservative nations in Africa, such as Nigeria, Uganda and Kenya.
UK - Britain's military chief General Sir Nick Carter has warned that Covid-19 could cause a rise in global nationalism last seen in the years leading up to the Second World War. The Chief of the Defence Staff said economic crises and 'nationalist barriers' will create 'security challenges' across the world. 'What often follows a very significant economic event is a security challenge. If you look at the 1930s, that started with a significant economic crash – and that acted as a very destabilising feature. There are moments in history when significant economic challenges have led to security challenges because they act as a destabiliser.' The worldwide Great Depression, which started in 1929, has been linked to the rise of fascism in the 1930s which eventually led to the Second World War.
UK - The police phone call to Margaret Nelson came one Monday morning around breakfast time. It was as unexpected as it was unwelcome. An officer from Suffolk police was investigating an anonymous tip that the pensioner had committed a hate crime by posting on Twitter her personal view that you die the same sex as you are born. The force later dropped their inquiries — apologising and saying they 'got it wrong'.
JAPAN - A 7-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Japan’s Fukushima prefecture on Saturday, violently shaking cities on the eastern seaboard and prompting fears of a tsunami, weeks before the 2011 nuclear disaster’s anniversary. Several seismological agencies have put the magnitude of the quake, which hit east of Japan’s largest island of Honshu, at 7.0 or higher. At least 20 people were reportedly injured in the Miyagi and Fukushima prefectures, while around 950,000 homes lost electricity. No buildings in Fukushima reportedly sustained major damage. For context, nearly 16,000 deaths and more than 6,000 injuries were recorded, following the 2011 earthquake and tsunami, with a further 2,500 people being reported missing. English speakers in Japan took to social media to express their shock at the earthquake, which some described as far more violent than any they had previously experienced. “In more than 7 years in Japan, that was the strongest, longest and scariest quake I’ve ever felt,” one user wrote, while a Japanese Twitch streamer claimed the earthquake made her jump out of bed.
