USA - A new survey of citizens of 11 countries suggests that Joe Biden faces an almost impossible task when it comes to his goal of repairing frayed US-European relations. But it’s trite to simply blame four years of Donald Trump. A recent survey commissioned by the European Council on Foreign Relations has found that most Europeans look to Germany rather than the United States as their most important partner, having lost faith in America’s ability to elect leaders who share their continent’s vision and values.

UK - Having won more votes than any presidential candidate in American history, Joe Biden might have hoped for a triumphant entry into Washington. Instead, he travelled to the inauguration in a private plane to deliver his speech to more members of the National Guard than guests. A combination of the pandemic and security fears ruined normal proceedings: the event had become a target, crowds too great a risk.

USA - In America today, free speech can only be exercised in narrow and controlled channels. USA - At a virtual press conference held by the WHO December 28, 2020, officials warned there is no guarantee that COVID-19 vaccines will prevent people from being infected with the SARS-CoV-2 virus and transmitting it to other people. In a New Year’s Day interview with Newsweek, Dr Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, reinforced the WHO’s admission that health officials do not know if COVID-19 vaccines prevent infection or if people can spread the virus to others after getting vaccinated. According to US and WHO health officials, vaccinated persons still need to mask and social distance because they could be able to spread the new coronavirus to others without knowing it.

LATVIA - Latvia cruelly votes to put homophobic hate at the heart of its constitution. Latvia has changed its law to exclude same-sex couples from the definition of ‘family’ (Envato) The Republic of Latvia has voted to define family solely as “a union of a male and female person”, excluding the country’s countless loving LGBT+ families. On Thursday (14 January) the Latvian parliament, or Saeima, voted 47-25 for an amendment to the constitution stipulating that a family unit consists of a marriage between a woman and a man.

USA - Joe Biden issued a call for unity and promised to govern for 'all Americans' Wednesday, seeking to move the nation beyond the presidency of Donald Trump and what he described as an attack on democracy itself in his first remarks to the nation as president. In a 22-minute address after he was sworn in 11 minutes early by Chief Justice John Roberts, Biden drew a sharp contrast between his presidency and the preceding four years, saying: 'My whole soul is in this. I'll keep everything I do in your service, thinking not of power but of possibilities, not of personal injuries but the public good.' Biden did not mention Trump by name but wove a thread of contrast through his speech. He denounced 'lies told for power and for profit,' said 'there are truth and there are lies,' acknowledged the bitter divisions in the country as an 'uncivil war,' and referred to the MAGA mob which rioted in the place he spoke just two weeks ago, saying: 'Democracy prevailed.' He spoke in unique circumstances: no crowds because of COVID and a security clampdown in the wake of the MAGA riot, and for the first time since 1869, his predecessor absent.

USA - The new president and vice-president are inside the US Capitol having taken their oaths of office. They are taking part in a signing ceremony inside - Joe Biden has signed the Inauguration Day proclamation and nominations for his cabinet and sub-cabinet. Biden and Harris will soon review the readiness of troops, as per tradition, just outside the Capitol. After that President Joe Biden and Dr Jill Biden will depart for Arlington National Cemetery, where, accompanied by former Presidents Bush, Clinton and Obama and their spouses, they will lay wreaths at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. After that the new president will be escorted to the White House by the military, where members of an honour guard are awaiting Joe Biden's arrival. Kamala Harris, as the new president of the Senate, will take part in the swearing in of three new senators - her replacement from California and two newly elected Democrats from Georgia. This will be the moment control of the upper house shifts from Republican to Democrat.

FRANCE - The sound of social distancing is highly unpleasant to workers in a factory where the owner is trying to enforce social distancing rules. Employees at the French manufacturing facility of Essity, a Swedish company that makes hygiene and health products, have been told to wear a device worn around the neck that emits a high decibel sound if employees are too close to each other, according to Breitbart. The French Democratic Confederation of Labour, which is the largest union representing workers at the plant, likened the device to a dog collar, saying it is “a system comparable to that which deters dogs from barking.” The union told the French-language newspaper “Le Monde,” that the necklaces emit a sound of 85 decibels when “social distancing is no longer respected.” “The idea is to discipline employees and call them to order,” said union representative Christine Duguet, who called the devices “an attack on individual freedoms.”

AUSTRALIA - A storm of controversy is brewing in Australia after lobbying from Satanists got the pentagram listed as a symbol of faith alongside emblems of the world’s major religions. Satanists in Queensland are toasting a “small but important win for religious freedom” after the Sunshine Coast University Hospital added Satanism to the list of recognized religions in its multi-faith center. The pentagram is now displayed alongside a host of religious symbols including the Christian cross, Islam’s Star and Crescent, Hindu’s Om and Buddhism’s dharma wheel. Not content with recognition alone, the Noosa Temple of Satan is pushing to have Christian symbols removed from the center, labelling them “an affront to the religious freedoms of other people.”

With war-zone-like security, no crowds and coronavirus distancing for guests, Joe Biden's swearing-in as the 46th US president will be a muted affair unlike any previous inauguration. Where Washington is normally packed with hundreds of thousands of supporters, celebrities, socialites and lobbyists, the US capital is eerily quiet ahead of Biden's big day, which promises to be a mostly televised celebration of democracy. Coronavirus concerns were always going to dampen Wednesday's inauguration, but since departing President Donald Trump's supporters launched an insurrection in his name, Washington has ordered a security lockdown unseen since the September 11, 2001 attacks. That has forced Biden's inauguration team to urge supporters to stay home, auguring a ceremony at the Capitol like recent sports matches, with no fans in the seats.

USA - Without offering any evidence whatsoever, Representative Steve Cohen (Democrat for Tennessee) suggested white male service members may be seditionist conspirators. Cohen made the remarks on Monday during an appearance on CNN in response to reports the FBI is vetting 25,000 National Guard troops over fears of an ‘insider attack.’ According to NBC, US defense officials are worried about an inside attack or threat from guard members chosen to secure Biden’s sham inauguration. Cohen suggested white males who voted for Trump should be profiled because they may be seditionist conspirators. “The [National] Guard is 90 some-odd percent male; and only about 20 percent of white males voted for Biden … there are probably not more than 25% of the people there protecting us that voted for Biden,” Cohen said.

UK - The Sunday Times is facing a social media backlash for pushing Covid-19 vaccination passports as “freedom certificates” with many noting that the idea was considered a crazy conspiracy theory only a few months ago. An article published in the UK newspaper on Sunday makes the case for “immunity passports,” which would allow vaccine recipients to be exempt from lockdown restrictions. The piece, titled ‘Covid passports: a freedom certificate that may get the world travelling again’, argues that several countries will start to introduce the documents, in some shape or form, and pressure will mount on British authorities to follow suit. “Whether or not the moral, political and medical questions of favouring the vaccinated are resolved, demand from the jabbed hordes for the necessary paperwork to travel this summer is likely to prove irresistible,” the article argues.
