We’re in no state to fight a war

UK - A hawkish Starmer says he will put boots on the ground and “planes in the air”. He also says he’ll only do so with “strong US backing”, but president Trump has categorically ruled out American troops in Ukraine. What is Starmer doing? Except, that is, inflaming tensions and putting us at risk. But no one in Parliament on Monday, not one of them, stood up and said, “Excuse me, what?” Or, “You must be having a laugh.” MPs daren’t criticise the PM for fear of looking like a Putin appeaser and were too busy cheerleading to call out his arrant nonsense. So let me do it for them. How can we possibly afford it? Britain is already on its knees. Debt is a horrifying 98 per cent of GDP. Taxes are at their highest level for 70 years and about to go up again. This country needs to muster such resources as it has to take care of our own.

A country that was serious about defence would not permit the number of young male migrants who broke into the UK (another 600 came ashore on Sunday) to outnumber the men in our military. Some 162,000 migrants received settled status last year. The total British Army strength last summer was 109,086 personnel – 74,296 regular soldiers, 4,244 Gurkhas and almost 26,000 volunteer reserves. Anyone see a potential problem? A country that was serious about defence would make protecting its own borders a priority, not Ukraine’s.

A country that was serious about defence would find it a bit strange that its allies in the EU spend more on Russian oil and gas than on aid to Ukraine. In 2024, Europe is estimated to have bought £22 billion of fossil fuels from Russia while giving €19 billion to support Kyiv. If Russia poses an existential threat to the security of Europe, why is Europe filling Putin’s coffers with treasure? A country that was serious about defence would not have laughed when Donald Trump warned them eight years ago about the danger of becoming overly dependent on energy from Russia. Germany, we’re looking at you.

A country that was serious about defence would not have allowed its world-renowned armed forces, which numbered over 330,000 in the Sixties, to become a shadow of their former selves. We are down to 18,000 infantry, around 6,000 Royal Marines and up to 3,000 Special Forces, 850 of them being tier one SAS/SBS. How are they supposed to defend a border with Russia that is 1,220 miles long?

A Telegraph reader acidly points out the Royal Navy can’t leave port with all our frontline ships because we don’t have enough sailors. “We can’t deploy both aircraft carriers with our own ships to protect them as we don’t have enough frigates, destroyers and submarines.” Pitiful. As for our nuclear deterrent, that too would be in a grave state of disrepair were it not for magnificent support from the United States.

Our comment

A country that can't defend its own borders... A Royal Navy that can't leave port... The Bible makes Britain’s situation very clear:

“Ephraim, he hath mixed himself among the people; Ephraim is a cake not turned [half-baked].

Strangers have devoured his strength, and he knoweth it not: yea, gray hairs are here and there upon him, yet he knoweth not. And the pride of Israel testifieth to his face: and they do not return to the Eternal their God, nor seek him for all this.

Ephraim also is like a silly dove without heart: they call to Egypt, they go to Assyria [Germany]. When they shall go, I will spread my net upon them; I will bring them down as the fowls of the heaven; I will chastise them, AS THEIR CONGREGATION HATH HEARD." (Hosea 7:8-12)

“Just what is an APOSTLE?”
Just what is an Apostle?

Today we find the Church of God in a “wilderness of religious confusion!”

The confusion is not merely around the Church – within the religions of the world outside – but WITHIN the very heart of The True Church itself!

Listen to Me, You who know righteousness, You people in whose heart is My Law: …I have put My words in your mouth, I have covered you with the shadow of My hand, That I may plant the heavens, Lay the foundations of the earth, and say to Zion, “you are My people” (Isaiah 51:7,16)
