EUROPE - Britain has been warned it will be punished by Europe if the pound is hit by a financial crisis, after refusing to support a massive euro bail-out. Officials from both euro and non-euro countries said Britain should not ask for help if it runs into trouble because it had not signed up to a 378 billion pounds support fund.

The Republican's forecast for the budget gap may rise after revenue fell short of his targets last month.

SPAIN - The Spanish government is set to detail deep cuts in public spending amid EU concerns that economic problems afflicting Greece may spread. PM Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero is expected to outline the cuts on Wednesday, aimed at bringing down Spain's borrowing levels. On Monday, Spain said it planned to cut annual borrowing by 4.7% of GDP by the end of 2011.
