GARMSIR, AFGHANISTAN - Thousands of US Marines stormed deep into Taliban territory in an Afghan river valley on Thursday, launching the biggest military offensive of Barack Obama's presidency. The Marines say Operation Khanjar, or Strike of the Sword, will be decisive and is intended to seize virtually the entire lower Helmand River valley, the heartland of the Taliban insurgency and the world's biggest opium poppy producing region.
USA - The number of jobs lost in the US last month came in at 467,000, which was much more than had been expected. The jobless rate rose to 9.5%, from 9.4% in May. The non-farm payrolls number would usually be released on a Friday, but has been announced a day early because US markets will be closed on Friday.
GERMANY - A new study investigating the ability of water treatment facilities to remove artificial sweeteners from municipal water supplies has found that significant amounts remain despite the implementation of high-tech industrial water purification.
KAZAKHSTAN - President Shimon Peres, speaking at an interfaith conference in Kazakhstan, challenged Saudi Arabian King Abdullah to visit Jerusalem, which Muslims claim as their third holiest city. As the president spoke, the Iranian delegation walked out. Its representative explained, "Peres represents an abominable Zionist personality, and his place is not here."
